The goal of my project is to shine a light on the cruel conditions’ chickens face in mass production chicken houses and I want to challenge my audience to consider the ethics of eating animals. I want my audience to ask themselves whether they could continue to eat meat after being faced with the harsh reality of how this meat is produced. I also want my audience to consider the ethics of eating animals whether they are grown and killed humanely or not.
The project is a promotional video for a fictional butcher in which viewers are offered a chance to win a voucher but during this video images of the cruel conditions’ chickens face in large chicken houses will be spliced in. A survey will be attached which asks questions regarding facts about how chickens are treated in mass production chicken houses. The survey is advertised as something that must be filled out in order to win the voucher but there is a disclaimer stating that this is simply a performance, and no prize is available. The entire project is taking place online and has no in person audience participation.

This is a project based on the impact of the media on modern day body image, with the body in art as the theory at the heart of it. The message in this piece is that media image can be molded and can mold the thoughts of those people whom it impacts. A final piece consisting of edited images and a video recorded and presented as though live are combined to convey this message. The voice over on this piece is Mirrorland/ Will I ever be enough? Nails in the Wall BlurbBy Cathal O’RiordanNails in the Wall is a performance piece that is a protest against the relatively recent scandal regarding the Tuam mother and baby homes. The action of the performance is a subject hammering nails into a wall, mirroring the action of those who buried the children carried out to keep count of the infant death toll. This was a practice that was utilised by a mother and baby home in Castelpollard. Text from an RTE news article regarding the scandal was incorporated into the performance.

The body can be used in performance art in a variety of ways and for me personality, I often find it is used in ways that are too aggressive. Therefore, I have attempted to create a performance that harnesses the body in a simple and basic way. Religion is a frequent reference point in body art and with June being the month of the Sacred Heart, I have chosen to make use of this in my performance. The bible states that we should “glorify God in your body” and in this performance I create an altar to honour the Sacred Heart using my body. I have chosen to work with bread and apples due to their explicit religious meanings.

My name is Anna Gorman and I am a fourth year Drama and Performance student. I created this piece to represent the unseen Covid 19 that we wash our hands to prevent and I have moulded soap in the shape of the Covid 19 molecule. This is representing the cleansing action as well as a reminder of why this action is important. I have constructed an installation for this purpose. I have painted it yellow to represent the various Covid 19 warnings and literature that has become commonplace. I have a floating tap feature that is representing pure running water and I am washing my hands in a stainless steel vessel, which is representing a sterile environment. The concept being that as the soap dissolves the threat of Covid 19 retreats. I am washing my hands to the song Happy Birthday. It was recommended that we wash our hands while singing this song twice, as it was the perfect duration time. I have also incorporated the names of male and female students on campus in alphabetical order for the duration of the piece and as the soap dissolves. The idea behind this is to acknowledge that everyone has had a birthday in lockdown and by the symbolic nature of this piece it will bring a little joy and hope to the spectators for the duration of the piece. I have constructed and recorded everything for this piece myself.
