I’ve come up with the idea to break social norms by performing different tasks, in various locations, I also intend on disturbing liminal spaces such as train stations or airports. Some of these tasks can be mundane and also random or pointless. It’s to prove a point that we do not have to perform tasks that society has constructed in certain locations in and minimal and abstract way.

Isolation Room
Isolation Room

My performance piece which is called Isolation Room is about a young man trapped in a room blocked off from society with nothing but his thoughts. While in the room on his own he starts playing with a stress ball to relieve his mind from the pressures from the outside world. He starts off by sitting on his bed moving the ball from one hand to the other over and over again his movement’s then get faster, he then gets up real quick and paces up and down the room while catching the ball. As he paces up and down the room his movement gets faster and faster while repeating the same movements over and over again. He then realises that he can’t go any further and stops as if he has gone as far as he could, he then turns around looks out the window and sits down on his bed realising that he can’t take it anymore and drops his head. There is also music played throughout the performance piece. This adds more emotion to the scene and matches the pace of the characters movement as the movement keeps building throughout the performance.

I want to explore what a daily routine can do to your mind. While it can be comforting it can really exhaust you at the same time and make you feel like you are just repeating the same thing for your whole life. I strive to emulate practitioners like Pina Bausch who repeated significant movements and routines over and over again to the point of exhaustion.

‘Dystant‘ represents the experience of Gender Dysphoria, in particular focusing on its impact on mental health. This piece takes the personal accounts of young genderqueer adults and makes their voices heard. With the combined use of performance and animation, ‘Dystant‘ features dark visuals that aim to recreate the state of mind of many individuals living with Dysphoria and societal pressure.

It is my intention in this piece to model the work of Sophie Calle and to observe people in the public and to build a biography of who I think they are and what their lives are like.

‘An eerie performance that captures the inner struggle of artists and musicians around Ireland today. The performance takes inspiration from the studies of the liminal space and how it can be related to music, how musicians are trapped inside this threshold and the opportunities that present themselves but are just out of reach.’

Anna Gorman
BA (Hons) in Drame and Performance
My name is Anna Gorman and I am a fourth year Drama and Performance student. I created this piece to represent the unseen Covid 19 that we wash our hands to prevent and I have moulded soap in the shape of the Covid 19 molecule. This is representing the cleansing action as well as a reminder of why this action is important. I have constructed an installation for this purpose. I have painted it yellow to represent the various Covid 19 warnings and literature that has become commonplace. I have a floating tap feature that is representing pure running water and I am washing my hands in a stainless steel vessel, which is representing a sterile environment. The concept being that as the soap dissolves the threat of Covid 19 retreats. I am washing my hands to the song Happy Birthday. It was recommended that we wash our hands while singing this song twice, as it was the perfect duration time. I have also incorporated the names of male and female students on campus in alphabetical order for the duration of the piece and as the soap dissolves. The idea behind this is to acknowledge that everyone has had a birthday in lockdown and by the symbolic nature of this piece it will bring a little joy and hope to the spectators for the duration of the piece. I have constructed and recorded everything for this piece myself.

The Body in Process
The Body in Process

BA (Hons) in Drame and Performance
The body can be used in performance art in a variety of ways and for me personality, I often find it is used in ways that are too aggressive. Therefore, I have attempted to create a performance that harnesses the body in a simple and basic way. Religion is a frequent reference point in body art and with June being the month of the Sacred Heart, I have chosen to make use of this in my performance. The bible states that we should “glorify God in your body” and in this performance I create an altar to honour the Sacred Heart using my body. I have chosen to work with bread and apples due to their explicit religious meanings.

Nails in the Wall BlurbBy Cathal O’RiordanNails in the Wall is a performance piece that is a protest against the relatively recent scandal regarding the Tuam mother and baby homes. The action of the performance is a subject hammering nails into a wall, mirroring the action of those who buried the children carried out to keep count of the infant death toll. This was a practice that was utilised by a mother and baby home in Castelpollard. Text from an RTE news article regarding the scandal was incorporated into the performance.

This is a project based on the impact of the media on modern day body image, with the body in art as the theory at the heart of it. The message in this piece is that media image can be molded and can mold the thoughts of those people whom it impacts. A final piece consisting of edited images and a video recorded and presented as though live are combined to convey this message. The voice over on this piece is Mirrorland/ Will I ever be enough? The goal of my project is to shine a light on the cruel conditions’ chickens face in mass production chicken houses and I want to challenge my audience to consider the ethics of eating animals. I want my audience to ask themselves whether they could continue to eat meat after being faced with the harsh reality of how this meat is produced. I also want my audience to consider the ethics of eating animals whether they are grown and killed humanely or not.
The project is a promotional video for a fictional butcher in which viewers are offered a chance to win a voucher but during this video images of the cruel conditions’ chickens face in large chicken houses will be spliced in. A survey will be attached which asks questions regarding facts about how chickens are treated in mass production chicken houses. The survey is advertised as something that must be filled out in order to win the voucher but there is a disclaimer stating that this is simply a performance, and no prize is available. The entire project is taking place online and has no in person audience participation.

The story in depth revolves full scope around the Statue of Liberty and its creator Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s workshop being the main setting, as one travels from Bartholdi’s workshop to the next doorway they have now entered the present realm of the workshop, and is now an present ancestor of Bartholdi who exploits the Statue of Liberty for personal gain and wealth. Moreover one then passes through to the next doorway and are in the future, 2077 to be exact. They are another ancestor who is against the exploitation of the Statue of Liberty, as they feel that the Bartholdi ancestral line has forgotten why the monument was built, to commemorate the friendship of 2 nations, they then intend to tear it down as to stop future generations exploiting the statue.
The Submission of the final piece of the was thanks to encouragement of the lectures and the willingness of each group member of wanting to at least submit something that was close to the vision that the driving force of inspiration. Each member used the skills acquired throughout the two years to develop something that new to their skills and challenging to their abilities.

Our Project is based on the concept of The Illusion of Time. We took this project as an opportunity to take advantage of the creative freedom we were given and design an interactive project in a way we had not done before, as well as making it relatable to our peers. This led us to the idea of creating Snapchat filters, a series of podcasts and an interactive website to portray how the illusion of times is incorporated into lockdown, the butterfly effect, emotions and dreams. We all have an individual story to tell based on each of the topics which will be told through the creation of interactive Snapchat filters. All of these stories will be represented by one avatar, a college student, to convey that this character relates to all of the topics in a unique way. Our avatar will use a blog style webpage to share their life experiences based on the chosen topics on the illusion of time. Here, they will share the podcast episodes and the Snapchat filters to express their thoughts and feelings. This makes our project real and relatable to the audience. This task has given us the ability to experiment with new software’s and create a unique, relatable, interactive project.

Synopticon

Synopticon,a visual novel with the themes of time, perception, and déjà vu using technological, sociological and media symbolism to explore the topics of how we interpret those around us both in real life and through media. It tells the story of two friends, Yuki and Minoru, and their difficult relationship and how they perceive each other with the ‘help’ of two other worldly beings, Cassian and Achill. As the story relied on a lot of written dialogue and thevisual representation of the dream world, the best way to get the story across was through a visual novel. That way both the visual and storytelling aspect was kept intact, and the player could receive as much information as possible and understand the message being sent. A visual novel was also chosen as it doesn’t rely on as much heavy editing or the creation of much graphics as much can be reused effectively, freeing up time to perfect the story.Lastly, all characters aren’t heavily gendered. While given masculine pronouns, no one within Synopticon is given a gender centredrole within the story, allowing players to connect with the characters regardless of gender and to allow interpretation of these characters.

Time Loop

The project was labelled ‘Time Loop’ because the main character, Olivia Waters, continues to loop through time from the 1990s to the 2020s. At each decade she has to complete certain tasks to move to the next decade. The idea was to have an animated girl in a room with a closet of clothes. The closet would change to the fashion of the decade. There would also be music playing that reflected that decade. The result would be an interactive game that would allow the player to work through the clues to help Olivia move to the next decade. The game was designed to appeal to a player who liked music and fashion, and was interested in how they changed over time. The project scope was reduced the decades to exclude earlier decades to suit the timeline of the continual assessment.

Let’s Talk… is a podcast-based research project which hopes to provide the students of Ireland with a platform to voice and celebrate their differences. Let’s Talk… aims to highlight the importance of inclusion for students who identify with groups that are marginalized or othered within Irish society by creating a podcast mini-series that shares personal views and experiences of inclusion within college, covering topics of feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, ethnicity and living with a disability. Our objective is to connect with fellow college students in Ireland and to share information with them that is easily accessible and digestible. Between our podcast and the information found on our website, we hope that by raising awareness and educating on the topic of inclusion, it will help to improve inclusivity for those students who feel marginalized or othered in Irish society.

The majority of Theatre and Film Practice students see the 3rd year shows as the pinnacle of their time at Dkit, at least academically speaking. That has not been possible this year, one more small cruelty heaped upon the miseries caused by the coronavirus. There are learning outcomes for these modules that are not listed in any documentation or on any website. These are the graduate attributes of fortitude, resilience and inventiveness, and the students have shown these in abundance. Beginning with a more or less blank piece of paper, they have created a story and told it using a format previously alien to them, without blinking or complaint. This, then, is their riposte to Covid, the story of four young people and their journeys through not untypical Irish experiences, the obstacles they faced and overcame, the trials and tribulations, long lives lived and memories of when they were…….19
